Opening Sequence Analysis 1 - 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'
The first opening sequence I am going to look at is John Hughes' Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which is a teen comedy from the 1980s.
This opening sequence does the following:
- Shows credits and company logos such as "Paramount Pictures" along with actors' names, the director's name, the names of other crew members, and the title of the movie
- Introduces the main character (clearly establishing his character traits) along with members of his family
- Shows sibling rivalry which implies comedic occurrences (typical of the genre)
- Creates an engaging plot and an enigma within the first 40 seconds
- Breaks the fourth wall with the main character and the audience - engages with the audience which makes them want to know more, but also positions them with the main character
- Includes an establishing shot of the location where the action takes place
- Uses fades
- Includes some music that links to the genre
