Romantic Comedy - Narrative Structure

For this part of my research into the conventions of rom-coms, I will be looking at the typical narrative structure of films from the genre. The narrative structure of a rom-com usually follows a very similar storyline. I have found a website which shows this structure clearly and has given me some ideas for the narrative of my film, and what I should include in my opening.

Romantic Comedy Narrative Structure

Introductions - the audience meets the two protagonists, often separately (this is what I am aiming to do in my opening sequence by introducing just one of the protagonists). before those characters meet each other. It is important to introduce each character so that the audience become familiar with their character traits, and begin to form a bond with them.

The meeting (or 'meet cute') - this is where the two characters meet, often with romantic sparks flying - however, in some cases the two protagonists in a rom-com start off by hating each other!

Falling in love - the couple's chemistry develops and their relationship grows. However, the audience knows that there has to be a twist and some obstacle that will, at least momentarily, force them apart.

The turning point - this is where the couple faces a conflict or hurdle, or they have an argument that threatens to end their relationship.

The break up - the couple is (temporarily) torn apart because of their differences.

The happy ending - the film's climax, where the couple resolves the conflict, finds true love and lives "happily ever after".
