Analysing Existing Romantic Comedy Film Titles
Now that I have done research on romantic comedies/farces, I will now be choosing a title for my film. Below, are a list of titles for existing romantic comedies/farces, which I will look at to see if there are consistencies across them and to see whether the title of the film instantly indicates genre to the audience.
I suspect that the film titles will indicate the genre (through reference to love and by emphasising some element of comedy) and that they will relate in some way to the narrative of the film.
Having looked at the titles carefully, I have noticed the following commonalities:
- Some make reference to female names - "Annie Hall", "Mary" and "Irene"
- Some make reference to relationships between 'the sexes' but, rather than focus on 'romance', they refer to 'sex' - 'sex' provides the potential obstacle between the couple, in turn providing the opportunity for farce - The Mating Season, Sex and the Single Girl, Due Date, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up.
- There is often a reference to an 'event' (often one that is linked with romance) that provides the opportunity for farce - Groundhog Day, Love Wedding Repeat, Meet the Parents, Due Date, Dinner for Schmucks, Bridesmaids, Date Night and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
