Romantic Comedy - Screwball or Farce Sub-genre
For my opening sequence I am going to be creating a farcical romantic comedy, otherwise know as a 'screwball romantic comedy'.
Characteristics of screwball comedies include:
- reverse class snobbery, so to be poor is somehow to be better
- a major inversion or subversion of the character's normality
- role play - characters engage in masquerade, taking on different names, personae, accents
- a blend of sophistication and slapstick
- lines spoken rapidly
Examples of modern and classic screwball comedies include Meet the Parents, What's up, Doc? and Sex and the Single Girl.
