Romantic Comedy Opening Sequence - 'Knocked Up'

My second romantic comedy/farce opening sequence I will be looking at and analysing is, Knocked Up.

The opening sequence of Knocked Up presents the genre of a romantic comedy in an almost opposite way to There's Something About Mary. The main protagonist, Ben, is introduced as a carefree, immature and irresponsible adult. Someone who you would not want to father your child.

The opening sequence starts with the Universal production company logo. Romantic comedies are usually produced by big Hollywood conglomerates, with high production values and featuring A-list stars.

The music is very hip-hop and upbeat, which reflects Ben's goofy personality. We see an out-of-shape Ben, winning in a boxing match, which shows the comedy and possibly farcical themes/narrative in this movie.

The titles are in a lowercase font, which is very common for films from the romantic comedy genre and reflects Ben's relaxed personality. More of Ben's antics, such as smoking weed and setting his gloves on fire, emphasise his irresponsibility and lack of safety (marking him out as unsuitable to father a child, as he is presented as a child himself).

We then see him on a rollercoaster, which puts a spotlight on his child-like personality and emphasises his wacky traits. This creates the expectation that he will have to change (but that it is likely he will struggle to do so). It also suggests that he will meet a partner who is in opposition to him, in terms of values, beliefs and lifestyle, and that this clash of personalities will be the source of much of the film's comedy.
