Choosing My Font - Introduction

I am now going to look at different possible fonts to use in the titles for my film The Undergraduate. From looking at different opening sequences from the romantic comedy/farce genre, I have found that the fonts are mostly reflective of their genre, often in lower case and serif (though there are some notable exceptions such as the font used for Date Night.

I have started looking at a number of font websites to help me choose an appropriate font.

DaFont

This is a useful website, as there are thousands of different fonts to choose from - all of which are free to download. The site also gives the user the opportunity to see the title of your film in each font, which will help me narrow down my search. There are a number of categories, with fonts split into different styles.

The downside to this website is that the categories for the different fonts, are not split into movie genres, and this will make scrolling through lots of different fonts quite time consuming.

This is a great website to look at for potential fonts, as they have the original fonts to specific movies and split categories into different movie genres, for an easier selection process. I am able to go directly to fonts for romances, comedies and romantic comedies, where there are film posters for many movies within those genres and information about the exact (or similar) fonts used.

The downside to this website is that even though you can find the exact font used for a specific movie, the fonts are not available for free download and must be purchased. However, I have had quite a lot of success once I have established the name of the fonts I like, searching free downloads for those fonts using Google.

LinoType is another useful font website to use, as the site has a specific section on movie fonts. However, fonts are not split into genre (and are not available for free download) and the selection of movies is quite outdated, for example the 'Current Movies' section shows films from 2014 as 'current'.
